My second snorkelling session of 2023 was a much happier event than the first.
Three friends from one of my cold-water swimming groups joined me at Telegraph Cove (in the District of Saanich at the south end of Vancouver Island, not the tiny community much farther north on Johnstone Strait). We did not see much and were not expecting to because the goal was for them to just get a feel for it and to try out some equipment.
The water temperature was 8 C, so it was noticeably warmer than Saanich Inlet. Near the beach we were well sheltered from the SE wind but the left side, where I usually find the most marine life, was too rough to safely get up close to any of the anemones in the crevices between the barnacle-encrusted rocks.
I am very eagerly looking forward to next time.
